Artificial intelligence provides better patient safety

A collaboration between the University of Agder and Sørlandet Hospital has led to the development of a system that can provide great benefits in terms of patient safety and treatment quality. Together with chief physician with Tor Oddbjørn Tveit and professor Ole-Christoffer Granmo, research fellow Geir Thore Berge researches the structure of health information. Using new recipes (algorithms), Berge has developed a system that recognizes linguistic patterns and concepts in large amounts of data. - The technology contributes to safer and up-to-date information available to the doctors in the patient treatment. The research results so far show that the system's precision is not far from the level of experienced clinicians. In addition, the computer is much faster than the doctors, says Geir Thore Berge.

Today, Minister of Local Government and Modernization Jan Tore Sanner learned more about the future-oriented project when he visited the hospital in Kristiansand. - The results so far are very promising. The system captures meaning and associations and is wiser than before. Nine out of ten relevant information related to allergies is discovered, says Tor Oddbjørn Tveit. He was the one who suggested testing the new algorithms on allergy in the first place. "Allergy can be a difficult, complex and somewhat woolly term, and if the system can learn this field, it will probably be transferable to other disease areas," says Tveit.

The computer quickly retrieves relevant information about the patient so that the doctor can make a safer decision, but without the system suggesting which treatment the patient should receive. Using algorithms embedded in a learning process where, for example, all words associated with allergy are input, the system associates itself with the relevant information from the patient's documents. The recipes are so-called learning algorithms. Not only does the system recover and retrieve information that is loaded, but it is also able to put the information together in a new way. Berge has developed a computer system that feeds Granmos algorithms with the correct rules and concepts, while consultant Tveit has been a supporter of the medical.
